Assistance to Persons with Specific Needs 

Persons with specific needs include persons with disabilities, older persons and members of the LGBTI community.  They are particularly affected as their difficult living conditions heighten their susceptibility to abuse and exploitation and limit their access to services, exposing them to heightened risks.    

Organizations providing support to persons with disabilities and older persons 

Through its partners, UNHCR provides certain specialized services, including psychosocial support, counselling, financial assistance and assistive devices on a case-by-case basis.

70+ Initiative – UNHCR Urban Cash Transfer Programme for Older Persons

If you wish to register a caregiver or family member to support you, please mention this when you contact UNHCR. 

Organizations providing support to LGBTI groups: 

HOYMAS Kenya (Health Options for Young Men on HIV/AIDS/STI) 

A community-based organisation based in Nairobi that provides the following services:  

  • Promotion and safeguarding of human rights 
  • Access to safe space and healthcare services. 
  • Organisational development and sustainability, partnerships and linkages 
  • Empowerment of MSM/MSW community members 
  • Security training to LGBTIQ+ individuals

NGLHRC- The National Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission 

NGLHRC is an independent human rights institution working for legal and policy reforms towards equality and full inclusion of sexual and gender minorities in Kenya.

The Gay and Lesbian Coalition of Kenya (GALCK+)  

A Kenyan umbrella organisation that advocates for the rights of LGBTQI+ people. Services include counselling and legal aid. Also raises awareness about LGBTQI+ rights through education, advocacy campaigns and lobbying for law reform and anti-discrimination policies. Website accessed here.
