Seeking asylum is a fundamental human right
You can seek asylum in Kenya if you have entered Kenya and:
- You are afraid to return to your country of origin or country of previous residence because you fear for your safety due to your race, religion, nationality, political opinion, sex or membership in a particular social group.
- You flee war or persecution in your country of origin, or country of previous residence.
What is UNHCR’s role in Kenya?
The Government of Kenya leads the response to protect and assist refugees and asylum-seekers in Kenya. UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, provides direct operational support, capacity building and technical advice to the Kenyan authorities. As the refugee agency, UNHCR also coordinates the efforts of UN agencies and partners to support Kenya’s refugee response and to avoid gaps in assistance.
