Applying for asylum
If you are afraid to return to your country of origin, or country of previous residence if you are stateless, because you are in danger of suffering serious harm for reasons related to your race, religion, nationality, political opinion, sex, or membership in a particular social group, you can apply for asylum in Kenya.
You can also apply for asylum in Kenya in case you flee war or events seriously disturbing the public order in your country of origin.
Department of Refugee Services (DRS)
In Kenya, the Department of Refugee Services (DRS) provides and coordinates the protection and assistance to refugees. DRS is a department within the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government. The Department of Refugee Services processes and decides on all applications for asylum. The Department of Refugee Services also issues identification cards for asylum seekers and refugees in Kenya.
