All UNHCR Services Are Free of Charge

Community-based protection is the process of identifying strengths, areas of competence, and various resources within communities and utilizing them to enhance their capabilities. Based on this, Community-based protection offers a range of activities and programs to enhance the existing capacities of communities and improve mutual communication between UNHCR and the communities. These programs significantly contribute to protecting and supporting communities and enhancing social cohesion with the host community. Some of these programs include:

Are you a person with disabilities or an elderly person (over 60) residing in Egypt and in need of specialized assistance? If your answer is yes to any of these questions, you can directly contact one of the multi-purpose community centers run by Terre des Hommes and funded by the UNHCR.

UNHCR seeks to empower and elevate the role of communities, thus implementing many related programs and activities, including:

  • Community Empowerment program through empowering refugee-led organizations, offered in partnership with Terre des Hommes through multi-purpose community centers. For more information about the community centers, please visit this page: UNHCR Egypt Community Based Protection
  • Sports for Protection Program, offered through multi-purpose community centers managed by Terre des Hommes, and announced through the Terre des Hommes Facebook page.
  • Youth Empowerment Program, offered through Terre des Hommes, providing access to courses from the Coursera program.
  • Digital Spaces and Digital Support through Wi-Fi services and computer labs in community centers.
  • Community Dialogues, Awareness Sessions, and Information Desks on key topics in community centers.
  • Inquiries Desk: located in all Multi-Purpose Community Centers provide community members with information about community events and services provided by UNHCR, partners and Refugee Led Organizations. Visitors to the MPCC can access information in various formats including service booklet, UNHCR’s online Help website, printing residency appointment, and updating the phone number registered with UNHCR (provided that principal applicant of the file is present). You can also contact the inquiries desk by phone as shown above.

  • All available services are free of charge.
  • If you know or suspect any abuse happening to you or someone you know, you have the right to report it and seek help.
  • Any complaint submitted will remain confidential and will be followed up seriously.
  • Reporting complaints will not prevent you from receiving services and assistance.

If you have been informed that you will receive a one-time emergency assistance, please follow the steps below to ensure you receive it smoothly:

1- Verify receipt of the message:

Please make sure you have received the SMS/notification that explains the assistance details, including the specified period for collection.

Ensure that the phone number registered with UNHCR is active and can receive messages.

Wait until you receive a text message indicating the amount of assistance and the date of collection.

2- Go to the post office:

After receiving the message, visit the nearest post office equipped with an iris scanner available in this page

3- Required documents:

Please bring your original, valid UNHCR card, as assistance will not be disbursed without a valid card.

4- Collecting the assistance:

Please collect the assistance within the time period specified in the message, as it cannot be disbursed after the indicated period has ended.

If you face a problem during the process, please try another post office branch linked above. If the problem persists, please visit the UNHCR office in 6th of October City or one of Terre des Hommes’ community centers listed at the top of the page.

Remember:

  • Make sure the phone number registered with UNHCR is correct and that you can receive SMS messages on it.
  • Keep the message until you receive the assistance.
  • Do not share your personal information or your card with anyone.
