Regarding the situation in Sudan..

UNHCR recognizes that some refugees may be considering returning to their country of origin despite ongoing instability. UNHCR does not promote or facilitate returns to areas where safety, human dignity, and sustainability of basic life needs cannot be guaranteed. UNHCR will also not be able to provide transportation to those intending to return.
UNHCR is not involved in, does not operate and does not facilitate the Sudan Return Train Initiative or any other irregular return initiative. This initiative is managed entirely by the concerned authorities, and UNHCR has no operational or logistical role in its planning or implementation.

Refugees should be informed that the decision to return must be voluntary and based on accurate, up-to-date information about conditions in their place of origin.

UNHCR encourages individuals to seek counselling and protection advice before making any decision, especially in contexts of conflict, insecurity, or lack of basic services in Sudan.

UNHCR will establish helpdesks within existing community centers where Sudanese refugees can approach to receive accurate information related to cross-border movement to Sudan.

Refugees should be made aware of the potential risks, including limited access to healthcare, shelter, documentation, and protection from harm.

The situation in Sudan remains highly volatile, with ongoing conflict, destruction of infrastructure, and limited access to services.

Refugees should be aware of disinformation or deceptive information and keep up to date with the latest updates regarding the security situation and available services in areas of potential return, while noting that the situation in many of these areas’ changes on a regular basis.

UNHCR does not currently promote or facilitate organized returns to Sudan due to the unstable conditions. UNHCR aims at providing available information to Sudanese refugees to assist in making a well-informed decision regarding any possible cross-border movement to Sudan. UNHCR does not in any way influence the decisions made by those contemplating crossing the border to Sudan.  UNHCR continues to closely monitor the situation in Sudan and remains committed to providing timely and reliable information. As developments occur, UNHCR will share updates to support informed decision-making within the Sudanese community.

Refugees should ensure they have valid travel documents and understand the legal implications of returning, including potential loss of refugee status in Egypt.

  • Refugees and asylum-seekers who return to Egypt have the right to request the reopening of their cases. UNHCR will review each request on an individual basis and follow up directly with the concerned person based on the outcome of the assessment.

Refugees can reach UNHCR Egypt through the following channels:

Infoline (for general enquiries): 0231330000

Working Hours:

Sunday – Wednesday: 08:15 am – 3:30 pm

Thursday: 08:15 am – 2:00 pm

UNHCR will continue to be reached via email through the following accounts:

UNHCR can help assess individual cases and provide guidance tailored to each refugee’s situation.

UNHCR continues to monitor the situation in areas that are accessible in Sudan, in coordination with partners, to determine the protection gaps and priorities of those arriving from Egypt. UNHCR also continues to monitor the trends and advocate for safe conditions, while offering support to those who remain in Egypt through protection services.

UNHCR is present in Wadi Halfa (Northern State) and regularly monitors protection needs at key gathering points. UNHCR also runs a help desk at the Sudanese Red Crescent office, where refugees and third-country nationals can receive support and be profiled. More help desks will be set up in other areas accessible to internally displaced persons (IDPs).

If you hear about people stranded, especially children at risk of trafficking, please report this to the UNHCR help desk or speak to the protection monitoring team during their visits.

If you are looking for a missing family member in Sudan, you can contact the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) at the Sudanese Red Crescent office and ask for the Restoring Family Links focal point.

For medical help, you can go to the Wadi Halfa Health Center. UNHCR, together with the Ministry of Health, AOSD, and the Sudanese Red Crescent, is working to make sure stranded people can access basic healthcare and get referrals for more serious medical needs.

If you need medical help, go straight to the Wadi Halfa Health Center. You should also report any serious concerns to the police.
