UNHCR in Slovakia

UNHCR does not have offices in Slovakia, but carries out activities through its office in Budapest, Hungary.

In Slovakia, UNHCR does not register refugees, does not examine asylum applications and does not issue refugee documents. The Government is responsible for this.

Examples of services provided by UNHCR in individual cases:

  • To facilitate access to a lawyer. Please note, however, that UNHCR staff is not in a position to act as legal counsel and/or to represent asylum-seekers or refugees before the court.
  • To provide information on the asylum procedure or explain certain details of the asylum procedure during visits to reception or detention centres.
  • To bring up complaints on ill-treatment or the conditions in reception/detention centres with the management of the facility and other authorities as required.
