Death Registration

Attention! All services and assistance of UNHCR and its partners are free of charge!

UNHCR and partners provide legal aid on death registration of refugees. The legal aid includes awareness raising sessions, legal counseling and legal assistance.


1. My family member died in Lebanon. What do I have to do?⬇️

To register the death of a family member in Lebanon, please follow the steps below related to the death registration of foreigners at the (Personal Status Department).

Step 1: Obtain a death notification or forensic report from the hospital or authorized doctor where the death occurred.

Step 2: Obtain a death certificate from a Mukhtar located in the area where the death occurred.

Step 3: Register the death certificate with the local civil registry office Nofous closest to the place of death within 45 days from the date of death. Please bring the death certificate obtained in Step 2. The fee is LBP 20,000.

Step 4: Register the death certificate with the Foreigners’ Registry at the Governorate for finalization and execution of the process. The cost varies based on the documents presented (LBP 1,000 stamp fee for each document presented for the registration).

If you are a Syrian refugee, you will need to submit the following documents:

  • Death certificate organized by the Mukhtar and registered with the Nofous.
  • A valid passport with a family booklet for the deceased individual, or
  • If the deceased is married or divorced, the family civil extract of the deceased stamped by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Syria and Lebanon and not older than 1 year.
  • If the deceased is single or widowed, the individual civil extract of the deceased stamped by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Syria and Lebanon and not older than 1 year.
  • Evidence of valid legal stay or entry of the deceased or their family member is not required for death registration.

If you are a non-Syrian refugee, you will need to submit the following documents.

  • Death certificate organized by the Mukhtar and registered with the Nofous.
  • A valid passport for the deceased individual.
  • An attestation from the relevant embassy confirming the registration and the family status of the deceased.

Step 5: Ratification of the certificate at the Ministry of foreign affairs. The fee is LBP 50,000 in total.


2. I did not register my family member’s death within 45 days. Can I still register it?⬇️

Yes. You can still register the death of your family members; however, you will need to pay a fine of LBP 100,000 as a late registration fee.
