Primary, secondary and some tertiary health care services are available to all registered refugees from all nationalities at the non-insured Jordanian rate at public health centres and Governmental hospitals
Governmental health services are available through public healthcare centres and Governmental hospitals that cover all Governorates. Thus, you can identify services near your location by asking your neighbours. There are no Governmental hospitals in the Governorate of Aqaba. However, you can access emergency lifesaving hospital admissions in the Royal Medical Services hospital, Prince Hashem Hospital in Aqaba.
Patients must present a valid UNHCR Asylum Seeker Certificate (for all refugees) and the service card issued by the Ministry of Interior (for Syrian refugees only) in order to receive services at the non-insured Jordanian rate. Note that if the UNHCR Asylum Seeker Certificate is expired, the refugee will have to pay for the service provided at the unified rate.
Very important note: UNHCR strongly recommends keeping your documents (UNHCR Asylum Seeker/Refugee Certificate and MOI card) up-to-date in order to benefit from health services at subsidized rates provided by Ministry of Health facilities.
Primary healthcase services
Primary healthcare services are available to all registered refugees from all nationalities at the non-insured Jordanian rate at public health centres and Governmental hospitals if they present a valid UNHCR Asylum Seeker Certificate and the service card issued by the Ministry of Interior (for Syrian refugees only).
Primary healthcare services are available for free in Caritas Downtown clinic in Amman through UNHCR support, it can be accessed based on UNHCR eligibility criteria.
Preventive Maternal and Child Health care services, family planning, infant and child feeding programmes in addition to routine vaccination services are available free of charge for all refugees from all nationalities, with a valid Asylum Seeker Certificate (for all nationalities) and the service card issued by the Ministry of Interior (for Syrian refugees only) in Maternal and Child Health centres of the Ministry of Health.
Pregnancy and delivery services
Delivery services are available at the non-insured Jordanian rate in all governmental hospitals for refugees of all nationalities holding a valid UNHCR Asylum Seeker Certificate (for all nationalities) and service card issued by the Ministry of Interior (for Syrian refugees only).
Pregnant women whose UNHCR Asylum Seeker Certificate will expire before the expected delivery date are kindly requested to contact UNHCR Registration Centre to arrange for the registration renewal , in order to get the non-insured Jordanian rate.
Kindly be advised that as a result of reduced donor funding, the cash for health program that covered the costs of deliveries for vulnerable refugees, had to be stopped. Refugees continue to receive health care services in government hospitals at the non-insured Jordanian rate. So, in the event of delivery, please go to the nearest government hospital and ensure covering the bill in order to avoid legal liability.
Emergency healthcare
Emergency services are available at the non-insured Jordanian rate in all governmental hospitals for Refugees from all nationalities holding a valid UNHCR registration and MOI card (For Syrians only). If you or any of your family members have a medical emergency which necessitate urgent admission to a public hospital, you are highly encouraged to approach ministry of health hospitals in order to benefit from the non-insured Jordanian rate.

In case of an emergency in Aqaba – including delivery – you can access Royal Medical Service Hospitals as they are the only available hospital services there.
In cases requiring non-urgent hospital services, you must visit Public Health Centres and follow normal referral procedure.

Tertiary healthcare services (for Registered Refugees)
Unfortunately, UNHCR doesn’t have enough budget to cover the cost of advanced costly secondary and tertiary health care. UNHCR will work relentlessly to coordinate coverage for these cases through medical and surgical missions. If you want to submit your documents for this purpose, please contact IMC focal points available in governmental hospitals through WhatsApp. Or when you visit Caritas Downtown clinic for primary health care services documents to be submitted through the clinic.
There are some surgeries and medications that are not covered by UNHCR such as organ transplant surgeries, cosmetic surgeries and very expensive operations or brand medications that have a local alternative/biological treatment.
Blood Transfusion at Ministry of Health Hospitals is free of charge for Patient’s with Thalassemia in need for frequent blood transfusion.
Mental health services
Mental health services are available for refugees registered with UNHCR through specialized mental health centers in Ministry of health facilities.
The services are offered at the non-insured Jordanian rate for refugees with valid Asylum seeker certificates (Refugees of all nationalities) and Ministry of interior card (Syrian refugees only). Please visit the nearest primary health care center to seek support.
For advanced and emergency mental health conditions that require admission to The National center for Mental Health, these are accessible free of charge for refugees holding a valid UNHCR registration and MOI card (For Syrians only).
Nutrition support services
Infant and Young Child feeding programmes and management of acute malnutrition for children under five, and pregnant and lactating working is available free of charge, regardless the level of vulnerability through Caritas clinic in Down town Amman that is supported by UNHCR.
Vaccinations
The routine vaccination services are available free of charge at any Ministry of Health public health centre. Please call UNHCR Helpline if you went to a public health centre and your children did not receive the relevant vaccinations.
