Education pathways

Education pathways allow refugees to move to another country to pursue higher education, such as Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD, or post-doctoral studies.

Unlike resettlement, education pathways are not based on protection needs. To be considered, you must meet the academic and language requirements of the programme. Universities and governments decide who is admitted, not UNHCR.

Who can apply?

Education opportunities are limited and highly competitive. Requirements vary depending on the programme but may include:

  • Academic qualifications
  • Language proficiency
  • Age requirements

In many countries, student visas are issued only to the student. Family members may not be eligible to accompany the student.

How do I apply?

You must apply directly through the university, scholarship programme, or organization offering the opportunity.

Before applying, carefully review the eligibility criteria, required documents, application deadlines, and any costs involved.

Finding opportunities

UNHCR regularly shares information about education opportunities and scholarships through the announcements section of this website.

If you have questions about education pathways, you can contact UNHCR Algeria.

Opportunities are listed on the UNHCR Scholarship Opportunities for Refugees website. You must initiate the application process yourself.

If you are looking for education opportunities in Algeria, please contact UNHCR’s educational partner, AFAD.
