Durable Solutions

Finding solutions that enable refugees to live their lives in dignity and peace is a core part of our work. They can include voluntary repatriation, resettlement, and integration.

However, in Thailand, these solutions are extremely limited:

  • Resettlement is only available to a very small number of refugees and is subject to the criteria and quotas set by resettlement countries. Therefore, being registered with UNHCR does not mean automatic access to resettlement and most refugees in Thailand will not be considered for resettlement. They can include voluntary repatriation, resettlement and integration.
  • UNHCR is not facilitating voluntary repatriation. Support is limited to providing counselling conditions on the conditions in the country of origin and advising whether a safe and dignified return is possible.
Local Integration: is not currently possible as there are no legal pathways for permanent residency or citizenship for refugees in Thailand.
