About UNHCR in Thailand

UNHCR is present in Thailand via three offices in Bangkok, Mae Sot, Tak Province and Mae Hong Son, Mae Hong Son Province.

UNHCR’s Bangkok office is responsible for urban refugees and asylum-seekers, which is this website’s focus. UNHCR’s offices in Mae Sot and Mae Hong Son support the “temporary shelters” for Myanmar refugees, which the Royal Thai Government manages.

In Thailand, UNHCR conducts protection and assistance activities for urban refugees and asylum-seekers.

Our activities include the following:

  • refugee status determination,
  • health care support for severe conditions
  • individual protection counselling
  • psycho-social support
  • sexual and gender-based violence support
  • child protection assistance
  • access to Education, including Thai language classes
  • cash-based assistance
  • advocacy for alternatives to detention

Will UNHCR services cost me money?

NO! All UNHCR services are free!
You should never pay for any UNHCR service or documents at any stage in the process. If UNHCR staff or interpreters ask you for money, please report them to UNHCR! For instructions on how to do this, see Reporting Fraud and Misconduct.
