Accommodation for refugees and asylum seekers

After you apply for asylum in Slovenia, you will remain accommodated in the Asylum Home unit and stay there until your application is resolved. In exceptional cases exemptions of this rule are possible. Please advise social workers at the reception centre about the exemptions.

If your application is rejected and you do not decide to appeal the decision, you will be requested to leave the accommodation facilities within 15 days.

If you are recognized as a refugee, you will have to move out of accommodation centre within 15 days. This does not apply if you are an unaccompanied child and accommodated in a High School Student Dormitory, as you will be allowed to extend your stay in the High School Student Dormitory until you reach 18 years of age or complete your education.

If you wish to return to your country voluntarily, you can ask IOM for assistance (see section on What to do if you want to return to your home country).

As a refugee and during the integration process, you can be accommodated in the integration house or you may choose to reside in a private accommodation.

There are two Integration houses that are run by the Ministry of Interior, one is located in Ljubljana and another on Maribor. You can stay in the Integration house for free for one year. If you actively follow your personal integration plan, attend at least 80% the Slovenian language and society courses, and meet with your integration counsellor at least once per month, your stay can be extended for another 6 months, following an assessment. If you are a vulnerable person, this period can further be extended for 6 months, in total for two years.

You can submit your application for the accommodation in the integration house in person at the meeting with your integration counsellor at the Government Office for Support and Integration of Migrants (GOSIM) or you can send it in by post to the Office, at “Urad Vlade Republike Slovenije za oskrbo in integracijo migrantov, Cesta v Gorice 15, 1000 Ljubljana”.  Instructions and an application form  (“Vloga” in Slovene language) are available on the following website Nastanitev v integracijski hiši ali drugi nastanitveni zmogljivosti urada | GOV.SI (Slovenian language).

If you do not wish to stay in the integration house or if it is not available, you will have to find another accommodation by yourself or with the support of NGO:

You will receive assistance from your integration counsellor and the non-profit organizations that are providing integration support. If you do not have financial means to cover accommodation costs, you are entitled to a financial assistance covering the cost of your accommodation for one year after recognition. This financial assistance can be extended for another year, upon condition that you have attended at least 80% of the Slovenian language and society orientation courses and have been actively in contact with your integration counsellor on a monthly basis. Financial assistance covers rent and utility costs.

Students without financial means in Slovenia, and without their parents or legal guardians, are entitled to financial assistance until they finish their education, provided they have not yet reached the age of 26.

Unaccompanied refugee children, who have no means of survival, are entitled to two years of financial assistance for private accommodation after they turn 18 years.

You can submit your application for financial assistance to cover your accommodation and utility cost in person at the meeting with your integration counsellor at the Government Office for Support and Integration of Migrants (GOSIM) or you can send it in by post to the Office, at “Urad Vlade Republike Slovenije za oskrbo in integracijo migrantov, Cesta v Gorice 15, 1000 Ljubljana”.  Instructions and an application form are available on the following website Prejem denarnega nadomestila za nastanitev na zasebnem naslovu | GOV.SI (Slovenian language).
