Asylum in Greece
How do I apply for asylum?
1Submit application
The initial application is submitted in Reception and Identification Centres in the islands upon entry/arrival (Lesvos, Chios, Samos, Kos, Rhodes, Leros) and in Evros. If you haven’t passed through reception and identification centre, you will be able to submit an initial application in the Reception and Identification Centres in Malakasa and Diavata.
2Registration
You will be invited to fully register your application in person to one of the Regional Asylum Offices or Units.
3Receive your card
The Asylum Service will determine a date for your interview, and you will receive your international protection applicant’s card.
4Interview with the asylum service
You must answer with absolute sincerity all questions asked by the Asylum Service staff.
5The Greek authorities on your application
After your interview, the Asylum Service will decide whether to grant you refugee status, subsidiary protection, or to reject your application.
The role of UNHCR in Greece does not include receiving and/or processing of asylum or resettlement applications. UNHCR staff will inform you of how you can apply for asylum with the Greek authorities.
The Greek Asylum Service is the only responsible office for processing asylum and related procedures.
