Important Information for Those Considering Applying for Asylum in Georgia

Starting from 1 October 2025, Georgia will implement a new Law on International Protection, which governs refugee status and what will be known as subsidiary protection (currently referred to as humanitarian status) – საერთაშორისო დაცვის შესახებ | სსიპ ”საქართველოს საკანონმდებლო მაცნე”
The new law introduces several changes to the asylum procedure. Among them are differentiated processing tracks based on criteria set out in the law, shorter appeal timeframes, and changes to access to legal aid and protection from removal—depending on which specific procedure an application is assigned to.
As with any new legislation, there may be some uncertainty and adjustment challenges in the initial period following its entry into force. Therefore, if you are considering applying for asylum in Georgia, we encourage you to consider this new development.
