Rights and obligations of recognized refugees and beneficiaries of subsidiary protection
After being granted asylum in Italy (as a refugee or a beneficiary of subsidiary protection) these are your rights and obligations:
RIGHTS
- You will be provided with a Residence Permit that is valid for 5 years. Your Residence Permit may be renewed.
- You will have access to work, education, social welfare and medical care under the same terms and conditions as Italian citizens.
- You can apply for a travel document and go abroad on the basis of the laws of the country you are travelling to. You may visit other European Union countries as a tourist, but you cannot stay there for more than 90 calendar days within a six-month period.
- You can apply for a long-term residence permit after you complete 5 years οf legal and continuous stay in Italy and if you meet all additional requirements listed in the law.
- You have access to welfare benefits (as basic income) just like an Italian citizen
- You have the right to be reunited with your family members who are in your country of origin or in another third country.
- You can obtain Italian nationality after 5 years if you are refugee, or after 10 years if you are a subsidiary protection holder, when you meet relevant social integration requirements listed in Italian law.
OBLIGATIONS
- You must respect Italian law. If you commit criminal acts, you risk losing your protection status.
- Children between 6 and 16 are obliged to go to school.
Rights and obligations of asylum-seekers
As a registered asylum-seeker in Italy, these are your rights and obligations.
RIGHTS
- You have the right to receive information about your asylum application, rights and obligations in a language you understand.
- You are entitled to basic assistance including accommodation, food, legal, medical and psychosocial assistance.
- You have the right to be hosted in a reception centre (for free). You cannot choose which reception centre you will be hosted in. You are not obliged to stay at the reception centre which you have been assigned to and you can move freely around within Italy.
- You have the right to work 60 days after you have submitted your application for asylum (international protection).
- You can legally stay in Italy until a final decision on your application is taken (with some exceptions. Please ask legal operator in the reception center).
- Children are entitled to education.
OBLIGATIONS
- You must respect Italian law. If you commit criminal acts, you risk that your asylum application will be rejected.
- You are obliged to cooperate fully with the Italian authorities.
- You are not allowed to travel to another country.
- Residents of a reception center need to comply with the house rules of the reception center. They will receive these rules upon their arrival in the center.
- Children between 6 and 16 are obliged to go to school.
