Travelling from Portugal to another country

If you are a refugee or a beneficiary of subsidiary protection residing in Portugal, and you have a valid travel document (passport) and a residence permit, you can travel without a visa to the Schengen Area countries for 90 days in each 180-day period for a short visit or tourism.

If you travel to a country outside the Schengen Area, you need to check the visa requirements of that country.

Travel to country of origin: it is not advisable for you to travel to your country of origin. It could result in the loss of international protection status in Portugal.


Travelling from another country to Portugal

If you are a refugee, a beneficiary of subsidiary protection or a stateless person residing in one of the Schengen Area countries, and you have a valid travel document (passport) and a residence permit, you can travel without a visa to Portugal for a maximum period of 90 days for a short visit or tourism.

If you are a refuge or a stateless person legally residing in a country outside of the Schengen Area, and you possess a travel document issued by that country, you need a visa to enter Portugal unless there is a visa exemption for holders of refugee and stateless persons travel document issued by that country.

What are the countries that belong to the Schengen Area?

Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lichtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland (Iceland, Norway and Switzerland are not EU Member States).


Travel document (passport) for refugees

If you have refugee status, you are entitled to a travel document, issued by the Immigration and Borders Service (SEF). It is valid for 5 years.

Travel document (passport) for beneficiaries of subsidiary protection

If you are a beneficiary of subsidiary protection and you cannot obtain a passport from the authorities of your country of origin, you can apply for the Portuguese passport for foreigners. It is valid for 2 years. You can find more information on the travel document for foreigners here.
