What decision will be made after the asylum interview?
➡️ If your asylum application is accepted (e.g. you obtain a “yes”)
You will receive a letter from the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI). The letter will state that you have been granted protection (asylum) in Norway.
Your rights and obligations as a refugee in Norway are explained in the letter from UDI.
The police will contact you to set an appointment to release your residence card and travel document. You also be given a personal identity number.
Your residence permit to live in Norway lasts for five years from the date of the decision. This means that you must apply for a renewal or a permanent residence permit when the five years are coming to an end. You will receive a reminder about this before the end of the five years.
You will wait for information on which municipality you will live in.
When it is time to move to the municipality, you will be informed and receive help to move.
You have the right to work in Norway.
You have the right and obligation to attend Norwegian language and social studies courses. You will be told when you can start these courses.
You must follow and obey the law in Norway. Failure to do so may have negative consequences for your residence permit.
➡️ If your asylum application is denied (e.g. you obtain a “no”)
An appointed lawyer will communicate the negative decision to you.
You may appeal the decision. In such a case, the lawyer will help you to prepare the appeal against UDI’s decision.
You can ask UDI to remain in Norway while you wait for an answer to your appeal. If UDI agrees, you will remain in Norway until you have received a final decision and answer in your asylum case.
