Social and Financial assistance

ALL services provided by UNHCR or any of its partners are FREE of charge.

Who is eligible for financial assistance?

Only persons recognized as refugees by UNHCR and with a valid UNHCR document can be considered for financial assistance. Financial assistance is exceptional and temporary and available to the most in-need refugee individuals/families demonstrating that they are unable to access sources of income to meet their basic needs. UNHCR resources are limited and only the most vulnerable cases are prioritised.

For asylum seekers, financial assistance will be provided only in life-saving situations, in very exceptional cases. For those receiving financial assistance, the period and amount might vary from one person to another as this is determined on a case-by-case basis.

How does UNHCR decide who will get cash assistance?

To decide if a refugee/family is eligible for cash assistance, UNHCR and partners conduct psychosocial evaluations and assess refugee households’ economic and non-economic vulnerabilities.

A committee meets monthly and decides who receives financial assistance based on socioeconomic and vulnerability criteria, which are determined case-by-case.
