Birth Registration

Registering your child’s birth is your responsibility as a parent and a right for your child, allowing them to accede to their full rights such as identity, education, health services, documentation, and employment in adulthood.

ALL services provided by UNHCR or any of its partners are FREE of charge.

How can I register the birth of my child?

➡️ Within 30 days of your child’s birth:

  • Go to the registry office of the place your child was born with the birth notice issued by the doctor and your identity documents (residence card, refugee/asylum-seeking documents or passport). It is highly recommended to respect this deadline to avoid judiciary procedure which takes more time.

➡️ After 30 days after the birth of your child:

  • You will need legal assistance to register your child after 30 days from birth. Contact UNHCR’s legal partner to assist you during the process:

If we are a couple not from Morocco, do we need to provide a marriage certificate at the time of our child's birth registration?

No. Moroccan law does not require you to provide a marriage certificate during the birth declaration of your newborn in Morocco.

If I am a single mother, can I be forced to choose a Moroccan or religious name or surname for my child?

No. Moroccan law allows you to register your child in Moroccan civil status, even if your child was born out of wedlock. You can freely choose a surname and a first name for your child.
