Can I access health care in Morocco?

Regardless of nationality or administrative situation, every individual in Morocco has free access to basic public health services in public primary health centres. Basic medical consultations and access to some basic medicines are free, depending on availability.

Is health care free to all in Morocco? ⬇️

Basic Public Health:

Consultations at public health centres are free of charge for refugees and asylum seekers.

Chronic illnesses such as diabetes, high blood pressure and tuberculosis are treated at public health centres. If a refugee and/or an asylum seeker has a medical emergency, he/she has to go to the nearest public hospital in the area.

Specialized Care:

Specialized consultations are not free and are provided at provincial or regional hospitals or university hospital centres (CHU for its acronym in French) if necessary, based on referral and/or orientation by the doctor of the primary health centre.

Can I get medication for free in Morocco? ⬇️

The medicines will be provided free of charge to refugees under a set ceiling, in accordance with the UNHCR list of essential medicines and in accordance with the procedure set out in the UNHCR health programme:

Due to budgetary constraints, only medications listed under UNHCR list of essential medicines are reimbursed. Therefore, refugees should have their prescriptions approved and stamped by AMPF before going to the pharmacy. Only conventional pharmacies deliver medicines for free to refugees. The list of these pharmacies is available at AMPF health centres. Refugees who require medical exams have to secure their own appointment at public health establishments and then request the coverage of the cost at AMPF (prior to the exam). Free medications and exams are NOT available to asylum seekers (except in lifesaving situations).

Can I get reimbursed if I receive medical care a private health establishment? ⬇️

No. Only in exceptional circumstances and with the prior agreement of AMPF, will health costs incurred at private health establishments be reimbursed.

Are dental and eye care costs covered by UNHCR/AMPF? ⬇️

No, except in emergencies.
