For Syrians in Greece

This page provides reliable information related to recent events in Syria. Whether you plan to remain in your host country, are considering returning to Syria, or have questions related to your rights and access to services, this page provides reliable, up-to-date information.

  • Syrians continue to be able to apply for asylum in Greece and to have their applications registered.
  • Thus, they continue to be entitled to all the rights of asylum-seekers and cannot be forcefully returned to Syria.
  • As in other European countries, the Greek government has suspended the decisions on the merits of asylum applications by Syrians or stateless who used to live in Syria. The suspension is until the situation in the country has stabilized and reliable information about the security and human rights situation is available.
  • Greece does not forcibly return to Syria any Syrian national or stateless persons who used to live in Syria
  • Renewals of asylum-seeker cards and renewals of residence permits of beneficiaries of international protection continue as before.
  • Applications for family reunification as well as for family reunion under the Dublin Regulation procedures, all continue as before.
  • All refugees have the right to return to their country of origin, at a time of their choosing, in a voluntary, dignified and safe way.

To support informed decision making about continued stay in host countries or return to Syria, UNHCR has created Syria is Home, where you can find information on legal steps, documents, housing, healthcare, and education.
