Protection status S in Liechtenstein

Eligibility

On 15 March 2022, Liechtenstein authorities activated a specific protection status – “temporary protection status S” – for the Ukraine situation. With this status, refugees from Ukraine obtain a one-year-long right of residence in Liechtenstein (renewable) after a short administrative process, without having to go through the standard asylum procedure.

Persons seeking protection who are eligible for temporary protection include:

  • Ukrainian citizens who were resident in Ukraine before 24 February 2022, Ukrainian nationals who were already legally resident in Liechtenstein before 24 February 2022;
  • non-Ukrainian nationals and stateless persons who had international or national protection status in Ukraine before 24 February 2022;
  • non-Ukrainian nationals and stateless persons seeking protection who were resident in Ukraine before 24 February 2022, can prove it, and cannot return to their home countries in safety and permanently.

What do you have to do to obtain temporary protection in Liechtenstein?

If you are already in Liechtenstein and want to apply for protection status S, you can call the local migration authorities at +423 236 61 41 or send an email to [email protected] to make an appointment. Alternatively, you can visit the Migration and Passport Office (Ausländer- und Passamt) during opening hours or go to a police station; however, there might be waiting times. After being granted temporary protection, you will have access to free accommodation if you cannot be accommodated privately.

If your application for temporary protection is rejected but you cannot return safely to your country of origin, you can lodge an asylum application. Your application will then be examined through the standard asylum procedure.

For more information, please consult the webpage Information on temporary protection, “Status S” in connection with the war in Ukraine in 2022  and the following document in Ukrainian, Russian or German.

These family members can join beneficiaries of temporary protection in Liechtenstein and will themselves receive temporary protection upon arrival. For questions regarding family reunification, contact Liechtenstein migration authorities by phone at +423 236 61 41 or by email at [email protected].
