Asylum in Liechtenstein

In Liechtenstein, the procedure for granting asylum is conducted by the national authorities. UNHCR has no formal role in this procedure and generally does not intervene in individual asylum requests.

For all questions about the asylum procedure, we recommend that you contact the Liechtenstein Migration and Passport Office (Ausländer- und Passamt). Additional information can be found here.

For requests concerning accommodation or legal advice on the asylum procedure in Liechtenstein, we recommend that you contact the Liechtenstein Refugee Council (Flüchtlingshilfe Liechtenstein) by email at [email protected] or by phone at +423 388 12 90.

On 15 March 2022, Liechtenstein authorities activated a specific protection status – “temporary protection status” – for the Ukraine situation. With this status, refugees from Ukraine obtain a one-year-long right of residence in Liechtenstein (renewable) after a short administrative process, without having to go through the standard asylum procedure.

If you are already in Liechtenstein and want to apply for this protection status, you can call the local migration authorities at +423 236 61 41 or send an email to [email protected] to make an appointment. Alternatively, you can visit the Migration and Passport Office (Ausländer- und Passamt) during opening hours or go to a police station; however, there might be waiting times. After being granted temporary protection status, you will have access to free accommodation if you cannot be accommodated privately.

Non-Ukrainian nationals seeking protection who were in possession of a valid residence permit for Ukraine until the outbreak of hostilities are granted temporary protection status if they cannot return safely and permanently to their home countries or countries of origin.

If your application for temporary protection is rejected but you cannot return safely to your country of origin, you can lodge an asylum application. Your application will then be examined through the standard asylum procedure.

For more information, please consult the webpage Information on temporary protection, “Status S” in connection with the war in Ukraine in 2022  and the following document (in German).

Information is available in Ukrainian here: FL-20220316_UA_Infoblatt Status S für Homepage_final (llv.li).

Family reunification

These family members can join beneficiaries of temporary protection in Liechtenstein and will themselves receive temporary protection upon arrival. For questions regarding family reunification contact Liechtenstein migration authorities: Phone: +423 236 6141 / Email: [email protected]

If you don’t know where your family is you can contact the Liechtenstein Red Cross: via email [email protected] or phone: 00 423 222 0130.
