Graduate Horizons Mentorship Programme

ANNOUNCEMENT: CBHI Enrolment 2024-2025

UNHCR is pleased to inform all urban refugees and boarding school students that Community Based Health Insurance (CBHI) enrollment for July 2024 to June 2025 has been completed. In line with the Government of Rwanda’s pledge to include urban refugees in CBHI, UNHCR has submitted a list of following criteria to be enrolled to CBHI:

  • Recognized refugees with valid ID who live in urban setting including their dependents under the age of 16.
  • Camp-based students who are pursuing their education outside of camps supported by UNHCR or/and other education partners.

UNHCR  has sent SMS to the registered number of everyone enrolled to CBHI. If you believe that you are eligible and have not received the SMS, please contact Protection Desk at the closest Community Centers, or call our helpline 0788302718/0788383608, or send us an email with your name, ID Card Number, UNHCR Number and valid telephone number to [email protected].

For students who live outside of the camp, you may contact World Vision or UNHCR Protection colleagues in your respective locations.

If you have been granted refugee status by the Government of Rwanda but have not yet received your Refugee ID card, or if you have recently changed your refugee ID card and have not informed UNHCR, kindly visit the nearest protection desk at community center or contact our protection helpline/email above. Please remember to indicate your name, UNHCR’s registration number and your ID number when you reach out to UNHCR.

For self sponsored students who attend schools/Universities outside the camp, kindly reach out to World Vision, the UNHCR Education partner, get registered to get CBHI.

Please note that due to the UNHCR funding limitations,   medical assistance  is prioritized for live-saving interventions for refugees and asylum seekers not covered by CBHI.

Call for refugee scholarship applications at the University of Barcelona 

In September 2015, the University of Barcelona launched the Support Program for refugees and people from conflict areas, managed by the Fundació Solidaritat UB. The Program aims to promote enrollment in undergraduate or master’s programs at the University of Barcelona by students who are refugees or in refugee-like situations. It is co-financed by the University of Barcelona, the Fundació Solidaritat UB, and the Barcelona City Council. The initiative is aimed at non-EU students who are threatened and/or displaced in their countries of origin or refugees in first asylum or transit countries, providing safe pathways to resettlement in third countries. 

What is this call for?  

The scholarship lasts one academic year (2024-2025) and covers the tuition fee of the Transition course to university studies (Spanish and Catalan language and Human rights course), full board accommodation (in shared rooms), and holistic support. This scholarship could be expanded if the student passes the transition course and if they are admitted in a University of Barcelona master’s degree or UB bachelor’s degree (second cycle) (academic year 2025-2026) following the renewal procedure. Likewise, in cases of a two-year master and last year of bachelor’s degree (second cycle), under previous request to the UBSF and completed academic performance and correctly administrative situation, the scholarship will be extended for the academic year 2026-2027.  

Who can apply?  

This scholarship is aimed at university students who are affected by armed conflict and violence, are in a situation of vulnerability in terms of human, economic, and social rights, reside in a non-EU country and wish to continue their university studies. 

What are the eligibility criteria?  

To be eligible, applicants must meet all requirements. Some of them are:  

  • Be in a refugee or refugee-like situation, as defined by the UNHCR  
  • Be in a situation of vulnerability in terms of the effective exercise of Human, Economic and Social Rights and provide evidence  
  • Have no prior knowledge of either Spanish or Catalan  
  • Be aged 26 or younger at the time of the deadline for submitting applications.  
  • Sufficiently proof, as required by the University of Barcelona, having carried out university studies and/or hold a university degree that allows access to an official, non-interuniversity master’s degree at the University of Barcelona or to the last two years (second cycle) of the University of Barcelona-specific bachelor’s degree at University of Barcelona’s centers.   
  • Apply for admission to official and non-interuniversity master’s degree programs or to the last two years of the second cycle of bachelor’s degree courses offered by University of Barcelona faculties and schools, excluding affiliated centers and the degrees in Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Psychology.  
  • Explicitly manifest a social commitment and a commitment to Global Justice

Yali Application Call for Cohorts 57, 58, & 59

UNHCR is pleased to announce opportunity for youth in Rwanda to apply for the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) Cohort 57, 58 and 59.

The Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) was launched by the United States government as a signature effort to invest in the next generation of African leaders. The need to invest in grooming strong, results-oriented leaders comes out of the statistics: nearly 1 in 3 Africans are between the ages of 10 and 24, and approximately 60% of Africa’s total population is below the age of 35.

WHO SHOULD APPLY?

Competition for the YALI Regional Leadership Center East Africa is merit-based and open to young East African leaders who meet the following criteria:

  • Are 18 to 35 years of age at the time of application submission,
  • Are citizens and residents of one of the following countries: Burundi, Central African Republic. Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda.
  • Are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the U.S.
  • Are eligible to receive any necessary visa to Kenya, and
  • Are proficient in reading, writing, listening and speaking English.

It means if you are refugees, you should be registered and able to obtain refugee travel document from the Government of Rwanda.

Criteria Used to Evaluate Applications

  • Applicants must be aged between 18 and 35 years old
  • Citizens of one of the 14 target countries – Burundi, Central African Republic, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda.
  • Applicants must be proficient in the English language (speaking, listening, reading, and writing) since the program training is fully in English (intermediate level will be accepted for applicants from francophone countries and rural/marginalized areas)
  • Applicants MUST not be U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the U.S.
  • Applicants must be eligible to receive any necessary travel document to Kenya (e.g. Electronic Travel Authorization/Visa)
  • Demonstrated commitment to impact their communities, countries, and the African continent positively
  • Applicants from the 14 countries must be residing on the African continent to be selected if they are not in their country of citizenship for one reason or another e.g. refugees. This is to ensure that the skills they gain will go towards benefiting the continent.
  • Applicants must not have attended any other USG-funded leadership programs, including MWF – Mandela Washington Fellowship (This is to give an equal opportunity to other young, deserving, and impactful Africans)
  • Prospective applicants must be willing and able to commit to the intensive 4-week program (residential, virtual, and blended/hybrid)
  • Applicants must demonstrate and prove that they have projects/initiatives/start-ups/social enterprises that are making an impact in their communities.
  • Each successful applicant must describe his or her efforts to address a current challenge in their community, organization, or country – This experience can be voluntary or work-related but must show the applicant’s desire to improve the quality of life in their communities.
  • Career, title, and level of education (or lack thereof) will not disqualify any applicant as we are looking for motivated young African leaders committed to addressing challenges in their communities/countries.
  • Applicants’ details must not have been flagged or exist on any global criminal databases for crimes such as terrorism, cybercrime, human trafficking, and economic crimes such as money laundering, corruption, etc

PhD degree at the University of Melbourne, Australia 

The Peter McMullin Centre on Statelessness (PMCS) is accepting applications from qualified scholars for a place in the Melbourne Law School’s (MLS) PhD program starting in 2025. They encourage applications from individuals with lived experience of statelessness.

“Leadership for Africa” (LfA) is a scholarship program aimed at empowering young refugees and national scholars from Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, and Uganda. This unique initiative offers scholarships for Master’s studies in Germany across various fields starting with the academic year 2025. Alongside academic support, all LfA scholars undergo a complementary training program in good governance, civil society, and career development.

University corridor for refugees to France – UNIV’R Program

The UNIV’R university corridor program has opened a call for applications for refugees residing in a first country of asylum who wish to pursue Master’s studies (2 years) within a Higher education establishment in mainland France. The program provides refugees with access to the university system, administrative, social and financial support (study and living scholarship for the total duration of the master’s degree).

Opportunity for Refugee Students: Global Internship Conference and CIEE UNHCR Student Challenge

CIEE, in collaboration with UNHCR, calls on teams of undergraduate students from across the globe to present their solution ideas to support increasing access to higher education and livelihood for forcibly displaced youth around the world.

Challenge participants will gain valuable skills and expand their professional networks, all while solving one of the most critical issues of our generation. Finalist teams will earn a trip to London to compete in person, and the winning team will receive a 2025 summer internship facilitated by the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE), and an opportunity to have their idea be selected to be shared with UNHCR and their networks.

Inkomoko is seeking applications from high potential Refugee-Led Organizations that would like to participate in a capacity strengthening programme.

Requirements

  • Must be a refugee led organization with some documentation on group existence
  • Must be willing to devote time to the program and willing to provide 5 consistent members for training
  • Must be willing to learn, transfer knowledge and mentor other organizations if required
  • Must have at least 10 members in the group including women and youth
  • Should be running an active project or business
  • Should have been in existence for at least one year
  • Should have a minimum annual operating budget of 500 USD
  • Should have employed at least 3 people on either permanent or casual basis
  • Must not be politically affiliated
  • Women, youth and people with disabilities led organizations are encouraged to apply
