Requirements

Before starting your naturalization process, make sure that all your information is up to date with the INM. If your information is not updated, your application could be affected.

To apply for naturalization, you must be 18 years old and meet the following requirements:

1. Time of residence in Mexico

  • 2 years if you are from a Latin American country.
  • 5 years if you are from another country or if you are stateless.
    • In both cases, starting from the issuance of permanent residence.

2. Documents

  • COMAR recommendation letter for naturalization.
  • Permanent resident card.
  • Birth certificate. (If you don’t have it, submit the recommendation letter issued by COMAR.)
  • Original passport (with at least 6 months of validity) or Identity and Travel Document (DIV).
    • If your passport was issued less than 2 years ago, request the Migration Flows document from INM.
  • Valid CURP, printed from the RENAPO website.
  • Record of entries and exits for the time you have lived in Mexico.
  • Federal and local criminal background checks.
  • Proof of payment to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

3. Exams

  • Mexican History exam (only for people with complementary protection or stateless persons).
    • Refugees do not need to take this exam.
  • Spanish exam if Spanish is not spoken in your country of origin.

4. Photographs

  • 2 passport‑size photos (4.5 x 3.5 cm):
    • In color, matte paper, white background.
    • No earrings, no glasses, head uncovered.
