A refugee is someone who had to leave their country because they were in danger. This may be because of:
- War
- Violence
- Persecution
⚠️ If you are afraid to return to your country because your life is in danger, you may be a refugee.
✅ Under Mexican law, you are a refugee if:
- You are afraid of being persecuted because of your race, religion, nationality, gender, political opinions, or membership in a particular social group.
- You are outside your country and do not have the protection of your government.
- Your life, safety, or freedom are at risk because of:
- Widespread violence
- Armed conflict
- Serious human rights violations
- Situations that seriously disrupt public order
⚠️ Examples of risks:
- Extortion, threats, physical assault, or sexual violence by gangs or armed groups:
- Because you refuse to cooperate
- Because you refuse or are unable to pay extortion money (“derecho de piso”)
- Because you refuse to become the partner of someone in the group
- Because you witnessed a crime
- DDiscrimination or attacks because of your religion, political opinions, nationality, or ethnicity.
- Physical or sexual violence because of your gender identity or sexual orientation (LGBTIQ people).
- Domestic violence (by a partner, former partner, or family members).
- Being forced from your home, land, or property.
- Being forced into prostitution or marriage against your will.
- Armed conflict or serious violence in your community.
