What are sexual abuse and sexual exploitation?
Sexual abuse and sexual exploitation are unacceptable. UNHCR and our partners have a zero-tolerance policy toward them. Here are some simple examples:
- Sexual Exploitation:
- If someone working for UNHCR or one of our partners asks you for a sexual favor in exchange for food, shelter, guidance, or any other service or assistance.
- If someone offers you money or gifts in exchange for sexual relations.
- Sexual Abuse:
- If a UNHCR staff member or partner organization staff member touches you in a way that makes you feel uncomfortable or makes sexual gestures toward you.
- If someone has sexual relations with a child or adolescent. This is sexual abuse regardless of the age of consent in that location.
⚠️ These behaviors are STRICTLY PROHIBITED for all UNHCR and partner organization personnel at all times and in all places.
Report sexual abuse and exploitation
If you or someone you know has been a victim of sexual exploitation or abuse, you have the right to report it and receive support services. Reporting will not affect the services you receive from UNHCR or its partners, and access to services does not depend on making a formal report.

- Verify sources: Make sure information comes from official and reliable sources. Be cautious of anyone asking for money in exchange for services or promises.
- Do not share personal information: Do not share personal data, documents, or sensitive information with unknown or unauthorized persons.
- Stay vigilant: If something seems too good to be true, it probably is. Be suspicious of offers that require advance payments or the surrender of important documents.
- Report suspicions: If you suspect fraud or extortion, report it immediately. This includes irregularities involving government institutions, organizations, or humanitarian workers.
