What is Resettlement?
Resettlement is the selection and transfer of refugees from the State in which they have sought protection to a third country that has agreed to admit them as permanent residents.
RESETTLEMENT IS NOT A RIGHT, and most refugees will not be considered for resettlement.
UNHCR is aware that many refugees face a very difficult situation in Iran and desire to be resettled to another country. However, due to the extremely limited number of resettlement places available, only a small number of refugees may be considered for resettlement. The small number can include families of ALL types of family composition, including single people, old or young people, families with both parents or only with one parent and families with or without children.
UNHCR will identify families for consideration based on the available information and in line with the established criteria. Decision of who is accepted for resettlement is taken by resettlement countries, not UNHCR. Self-referrals for resettlement are not considered. Please do not approach UNHCR seeking resettlement. UNHCR will contact you if you might qualify.
However, if you are facing serious risks and/or vulnerabilities that you believe require support from UNHCR or one of our partners, you may contact your local UNHCR office.
Remember resettlement is always free of charge. If someone asks you for money in exchange for resettlement or other services by UNHCR, please report this through UNHCR Iran contact form
Do not believe fraudulent information you may read on social media about resettlement. For updates always refer to the official UNHCR Iran Help page website.
If you have any information about a UNHCR staff member involved in any kind of fraud, please inform us using UNHCR’s complaint boxes available at each office, or make a complaint to the Inspector General’s Office at UNHCR’s Headquarters in Geneva:
