Complementary pathways

Complementary Pathways are safe ways for refugees and asylum-seekers to enter and stay in a third country, where their international protection needs are met. Complementary Pathways are distinct and additional to resettlement. Third countries establish their own competitive criteria for complementary pathways and decide who will be admitted to their territories. Refugees and asylum-seekers can apply directly for pathway opportunities under these country programs, a UNHCR referral is not required.

To know more about available pathways and eligibility criteria, please check the below sections for opportunities verified by UNHCR Iran. The sections contain links to websites for programs, which UNHCR is aware that refugees have successfully accessed from Iran. UNHCR’s role involves counselling and sharing information on verified opportunities, criteria, and application processes.

Please note that all UNHCR services, including resettlement, assistance, and other services, are always free of charge. If money or other favours are requested from you by any UNHCR staff member, please report to UNHCR through [email protected] or https://www.unhcr.org/igo-complaints.html or consult our Help Page.

Be aware of individuals claiming false affiliation to UNHCR and/or its partners, including on various social media platforms. Do not trust anyone who claims to provide services on behalf of UNHCR, including resettlement and complementary pathways in exchange for money or favours.

For some pathways, application fees for visas and other administrative procedures may apply. It is very important that you check and verify the source of any fee request before making a payment.

You can email us about fraudulent acts and/or fraudsters at [email protected] or use a complaint box available at the gate of all UNHCR reception centers.
