Do I need a visa?
Most people require a visa to enter and stay in Switzerland. Requirements vary depending on nationality, length and purpose of the stay. Visa exemptions mainly apply to citizens from EU and EFTA countries (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway). Citizens and residents from some countries are also exempt from visa requirements for short term stays.
For example with a valid residence permit from a Schengen country, you may be allowed to travel within the Schengen Area for short stays (up to 90 days within a 180-day period).
However, it is important to ensure that you hold a valid travel document, and that Switzerland recognizes the type of travel document you hold. To avoid any issues during your travel or a possible refusal of entry, it is recommended that you contact the nearest Swiss embassy or consulate (discover the nearest Swiss representation to you by clicking on Travel advice & representations and selecting your country of residence).
To obtain a travel document and clarify if you need a travel authorization or re-entry visa to come back in your country of residence after your trip, you may contact the migration authorities in your country of residence.
How can I obtain a visa?
Visas can be obtained in advance from the Swiss representation responsible for the country in which live. Visas are only issued on demand and for a specific purpose. You need to meet certain conditions. Find out whether you need a visa, and which Swiss representation is responsible for your visa application.
The decision to grant a visa and allow entry to Switzerland lies exclusively with the Swiss authorities. UNHCR is not able to intervene at any stage of the visa procedure to Switzerland.
