➡️If your asylum procedure is pending (N permit), you generally cannot request a change of canton. A change of canton may exceptionally be granted, but only on very limited grounds. One example is if you want to reunite with your spouse or children. The SEM may approve your request if both cantons agree.
➡️If you are a recognized refugee (B permit), you can apply to move to another canton by contacting the immigration authority of the canton you want to live in.
➡️If you are a temporarily admitted refugee (refugee F permit), you can apply to move to another canton by contacting the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM).
➡️If you are a temporarily admitted foreigner (foreigner F permit), you can apply to move to another canton by contacting the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM). The SEM will check with both cantons and decide. Your request is approved if:
- both cantons agree or
- you are financially independent from social assistance and have had a job or vocational training for at least 12 months or
- you work in the canton and your working hours or commute are unreasonable or
- in case separation from your spouse or
- there is a serious threat to you or others.
