LGBTIQ+ persons in need of International Protection
In many societies, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersexual, or queer (LGBTIQ+) persons fase discrimination, persecution, and violence daily. In some countries, same-sex relationships are criminalized, and even punishable by death. This often leaves many LGBTIQ+ persons with no option but to seek asylum in another country, but even in countries of asylum they might still face stigma and abuse. Other people are paralyzed by fear, suffering in silence and attempt to hide their sexual orientation and identities in an effort to avoid danger, heightening their vulnerability. In the last decades, the number of LGBTQ+ refugees and asylum seekers has increased, and they are qualified under “members of a particular social group” in virtue of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees, which defines the term “refugee”, describes their rights and establishes the legal obligations of States to protect them.
UNHCR works to protect all LGBTIQ+ refugees, asylum seekers, internally displaced and stateless persons, and works in partnership to provide inclusive services, protect their rights and identify safety options.

If you are an LGBTIQ+ person with a well-founded fear of persecution that has left their country of origin, and/or fear for your lige or freedom, and you need orientation and/or information regarding services and assistance (psychosocial, legal, safety) you can contact UNHCR and request assistance.
If you have an emergency due to your sexual orientation or gender identity, contact one of the emergency lines.
UNHCR also assists LGBTIQ+ persons in need of international protection and pending a nationality solution to access legal, medical, psychosocial, shelter, cash, and humanitarian assistance, and when possible, will help find other protection alternatives in a safe environment where they can be safe in their own identity.
