Please note that you must be in the territory of Iceland, or at a port of entry (an airport, land border crossing check point or seaport) before you can apply for asylum in Iceland.
If you are afraid to return to your home country or the country where you lived previously because of grounded fear of violence, persecution, war or you are in danger of suffering serious harm in that country, you can apply for protection in Iceland. The first step to receive international protection is to apply for asylum.
All matters concerning the asylum procedure is managed by the Icelandic authorities according to the national rules and regulations and with trained and competent national officials specialized in asylum matters. UNHCR is not involved in the processing of asylum applications in Iceland.
