Family Reunification

IMPORTANT: UNHCR is not currently facilitating family reunification applications in Pakistan. The information on this page is for reference only. If you want to reunite your family in other countries, please visit the UNHCR HELP Page for the respective country, visit the websites listed below, or contact IRAP (listed below) for further details.

FAMILY REUNIFICATION

The protection of family unity is an important human right. If you were separated from your family before or during your flight, they may apply for you to join them in the countries where they reside, under specific conditions. Whether you can join your family ultimately depends on the type of legal status they have in the country of residence, and the nature of your relationship. Family reunification programs, and who might qualify for them, are set and managed by individual countries.

UNHCR is receiving a number of questions from refugees about the possibility of reuniting with family members living abroad. Applications to access these programs are not submitted through UNHCR, but through the procedure established by that specific country.

If you are a refugee or asylum-seeker in Pakistan, aiming to reunite your family in the other countries, please refer to the UNHCR HELP Page of the respective country. Links to the details of some countries are below. You can click on the country you are interested in and follow the information. UNHCR will work to update this list to include details on family reunification programs of other countries. In the meantime, if you are seeking information about a family reunification program in a country that is not below, please search for “family reunification” on the government website of the country about which you are interested.

International Refugee Protection Project (IRAP) can assist refugees and asylum seekers with their family reunification procedures to Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States (in cooperation with lawyers and other organizations in some of these countries).

If you have a spouse or child in one of these and require legal assistance to initiate family reunification procedures, please visit the IRAP webpage for more information or contact UNHCR for further guidance.
