Working in another country

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, can advise you on navigating the international job market as a refugee, focusing on identifying specific work experience to enter the labour market in other countries.

Who can be employed abroad?

Each employer has its own set of criteria to determine who can be employed abroad, but generally, refugees are required to meet the following:

  • Language and work experience criteria set by the employer
  • Eligibility criteria set by the host government for a relevant visa

UNHCR focuses on and identifies the refugees who have specific work experience to enter the labour market in third countries.

We periodically share opportunities for labour mobility through community outreach, posters, telegram, community leaders etc. Information and counselling sessions are also provided for interested candidates on how they can lodge applications for labour mobility.

Who can help me in this process?

UNHCR does not participate in the selection process, but we and our partners assist in the application process by providing access to laptops and internet, and, if you receive a job offer, we may be able to facilitate travel documents and exit formalities.

You can also visit our Job-seeking advice for refugees webpage, where you can find links to the talent rosters of our vetted partners that can help you bring your skills, qualifications and experience to the attention of employers around the world.
