What does UNHCR do in Ecuador?

Since the year 2000, UNHCR has been working in Ecuador to support people who were forced to flee their country and cannot return because they suffered violence or threats against their life, freedom, or safety.

⛔ UNHCR is not responsible for receiving or processing asylum or statelessness applications; it is also not in charge of processing or granting visas. The Ecuadorian State is the only authority responsible for asylum and statelessness procedures, as well as all migration processes in Ecuador.

UNHCR:

  • Supports the Ecuadorian State so that people forced to flee can access the asylum and statelessness determination process in a fair, efficient, and inclusive manner. It also supports refugees and migrants by providing guidance on:
    i) the process to apply for asylum or statelessness status;
    ii) the stages of the process and what happens in each one;
    iii) what to do if the application is denied.
    UNHCR also refers cases to legal partners who can provide specialized and free legal advice, assistance, and representation.
  • Provides guidance to refugees and migrants on their rights and available services in Ecuador, so they can access healthcare, education, food, employment and entrepreneurship opportunities, among others.
  • Provides general guidance on visas so that migrants can regularize their migration status in Ecuador.
  • Works with public institutions, the private and financial sectors, and partners to support refugees and migrants in integrating into the community through information campaigns, employment training programs, guidance, and referrals.
