Family Reunification

How to apply for family reunification if you or one of your family members is a recognized refugee in Azerbaijan?

The protection of family unity is an important human right. If you were separated from your family before or during your flight, you may apply to join them in the country where your family resides under specific conditions.

Whether your family can join you ultimately depends on the nature of your relationship, and the decision will be taken by the state. Please contact SMS for details.

Who is eligible for family reunification?

Please note that family reunification programs and who might qualify for them are set and managed by respective government authorities. Applications to access these programs are not submitted through UNHCR but through the procedure established by the individual countries. Usually, it is State Migration or Foreign Affairs authorities.

If you are a refugee or asylum-seeker in Azerbaijan aiming to reunite with your family in another country, you can familiarize yourself with the country of your interest on the Help homepage.

If you do not know where your family is, or you cannot contact them, you can contact the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) office in Azerbaijan for family tracing services: +99412 465 65 19

What is the procedure to submit applications for family reunification?

Family reunification must be initiated by the family member in the third country. Your family should approach the local authorities in the country of their residence.

Whether you can ultimately join your family depends on the type of legal status they are granted by the government of the country of their residence (refugee, temporary protection status, or other) and the nature of your relationship.

NOTE! Not every situation allows for family reunification. If you are in contact with your relatives, please advise them to check with local migration authorities, non-governmental organizations, or lawyers whether your case qualifies for family reunification.
