The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) supervises the implementation of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees and its 1967 Protocol in North Macedonia and the measures undertaken to end statelessness and prevent it from reoccurring, in line with the 1954 Convention relating to the Status of Stateless Persons and to the 1961 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness, to which the Republic of North Macedonia is a signatory state.
UNHCR has been present in the Republic of North Macedonia since 1993, when the office opened upon the government’s invitation. The country has hosted refugees since its independence in 1991, with the arrival of refugees from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia.
In the past years, UNHCR has been closely working with the government for the protection of the persons under its mandate in North Macedonia, namely asylum-seekers, persons granted international protection, including the remaining refugees from Kosovo1, and persons at risk of statelessness.
