Rights and duties

Right to non-refoulement

As an asylum-seeker, refugee or person with provisional admission, you cannot be returned directly or indirectly to your home country or any other country where you are or may be at risk. For a more detailed explanation, see: UNHCR Note on the Principle of Non-Refoulement.

Right to stay

During the asylum procedure and once granted asylum or a provisional admission, you have the right to stay in Liechtenstein.

However, if your asylum request is rejected, you will be required to leave Liechtenstein.

Right to healthcare and social welfare

Health emergencies:

Call 144 if you need an ambulance.

If you need urgent medical care you can go to the main hospital:

Landesspital Liechtenstein
Address: Heiligkreuz 25, 9490 Vaduz
Phone: +423 235 44 16

Asylum-seekers, refugees, provisionally admitted persons and persons with temporary protection are entitled to healthcare and welfare benefits. Welfare benefits can be provided in the form of food vouchers and/or pocket money.

The State also covers the costs arising from affiliation to the compulsory health insurance.

If you receive a removal order and the departure deadline is set, you will be excluded from social assistance.

More information on welfare benefits.

If you have questions about the health services available in Liechtenstein, you can contact the Liechtenstein Refugee Council (Flüchtlingshilfe Liechtenstein).

You can also find additional information under Health | integration.li.

Right to work

If you hold a N, F or S permit, you are encouraged to find employment and have the right to work in Liechtenstein. However, you need the government’s approval for your contract. You will receive only a portion of your wage as part will be used to cover the costs of the social assistance you receive. This system is called Lohnzession in German.

This procedure will end once you are granted a residence permit (B permit), either because you obtain refugee status or as a result of the duration of your stay in Liechtenstein and your level of integration (five years after their first asylum application or application for temporary protection).

The job coach of the Liechtenstein Refugee Assistance (Flüchtlingshilfe Liechtenstein) can support you in finding employment.

If you hold a B permit, you do not need an approval when taking up employment and the Lohnzession is not applicable to you.

More information is available here (in German). For information on how to look for a job and about counselling services, visit Work | integration.li.

Right to education

Children are obliged to attend kindergarten (pre-school), primary school and secondary school.

Compulsory education in Liechtenstein lasts nine years (including kindergarten).  This generally includes children between 4 and 14 years of age. It is possible to additionally attend an optional 10th year of education.

For an overview of the educational system in Liechtenstein, you can consult the last page of this document (in French and German – document also available in Ukrainian and Russian).

The Liechtenstein Refugee Council (Flüchtlingshilfe Liechtenstein) is responsible for registering children in the asylum domain for school attendance.

As a rule, school attendance begins no later than 30 days after submission of the asylum application, taking into account school holidays and in consultation with the education authority (Schulamt).

If you would like to continue your higher education in Liechtenstein, you can contact the University of Liechtenstein (phone: +423 265 11 11, email: [email protected]).

More information on access to education can be found at Education | integration.li.

Right to family reunification

During the asylum procedure, you have no right to family reunification. Once your status has been determined, you may have a right to family reunification under certain conditions and depending on your type of permit.

See Family reunification for more information.

Right to travel abroad

If your asylum procedure is pending, travel abroad is not allowed. Provisionally admitted persons (F permit) need to contact the Migration and Passport Office (Ausländer- und Passamt), which will assess on a case-by-case basis whether travel abroad is permitted. If you do not have a valid travel document, the Migration and Passport Office (Ausländer- und Passamt) will determine whether one can be issued.

In principle, recognized refugees (B permit) have the right to receive a travel document. You can apply for this document at the Migration and Passport Office (Ausländer- und Passamt). The travel document ensures that you can return to Liechtenstein. However, you are not allowed to travel to your country of origin.

Within the Schengen area, you will generally be able to travel for touristic purposes without a visa for a maximum of 90 days within a period of 180 days. For travel to other countries, the respective entry regulations apply.

Important: Whether you are still in the asylum procedure, recognized as a refugee or provisionally admitted to Liechtenstein, you do not have the right to travel to your country of origin, except under very specific circumstances.
