Reuniting with my family

Family reunification procedures, and who might qualify for family reunification, are established by each country.

If you wish to reunite with family members outside Ethiopia, keep in mind that:

  • UNHCR does not handle visa applications for family reunification. Submit your application through the established procedure of the country in which your family is.
  • UNHCR does not make decisions on family reunification applications and has no influence on the decision-making process. We’re here to guide you through the steps and provide information to the best of our ability.
  • Check Eligibility Criteria: Understand the family reunification procedures and eligibility criteria set by the specific country you are interested in.
    • If you are a refugee or asylum-seeker in  Ethiopia,  aiming to reunite with your family in another country, you can reach out to the UNHCR family reunification focal points in these locations by selecting the country of interest on the Help homepage.
    • If you’re seeking information on a country not listed on Help or cannot find that information, visit the government website and search for “family reunification.”

If you cannot find the information you are looking for or have queries that are not addressed on specific country pages, you can:

  • send an email to our family reunification mailbox [email protected]
  • attend UNHCR counselling sessions at the JRS premises in Kirkos, Addis Ababa every Wednesday at 10:00AM to speak directly with UNHCR staff and get personalized assistance.
