Proof of Registration and Refugee ID

The Refugees and Returnees Service (RRS) provides refugee ID and Proof of Registration in Ethiopia.

If you made your request through Digital Request and Complaint System, (DRCS) and set up an appointment, you will receive the requested document on the day of your appointment.

How do I replace my lost Proof of Registration or Refugee ID?

If you have lost your Refugee ID, you should notify your nearest Police station. You will need to upload the declaration report from the Police through DRCS.

While you are not required to bring the Police report to collect your replacement Proof of Registration, it is especially important that you always keep all your documents safe.

If your current Refugee ID is about to expire, you are required to request a renewal one month prior to its expiration date.

How do I correct information on the Proof of Registration or Refugee ID?

If there is an error in the spelling of your name or any of your personal data, such as birth date, on your Proof of Registration or Refugee ID card, you can request the correction as soon as possible:

Please note that:

  • Requesting to change the name completely with a new name will ONLY be accepted when a court decision letter is provided.
  • Corrections of errors in name spelling that occurred during registration do not need a court decision.

Fayda digital ID:

Refugees and asylum-seekers aged 5 years and older can now be included in the national Fayda digital ID programme, following an informed consent procedure.

This means that to receive a digital national ID, refugees and asylum seekers are asked if they agree to share their personal data with the Ethiopian government, which includes name, age, nationality and address, as well as biometric data, such as fingerprints, iris scans and a photo, before the government issues the document.

If they voluntarily agree with their data being shared, the NIDP carries out checks to ensure the refugee or asylum-seeker is not already registered and subsequently generates the QR code and the 12-digit Fayda number for eligible household members. At this stage, the RRS can print and issue the new ID cards for refugees and asylum-seekers with the Fayda number.
