1. Can you leave Aruba with an expired passport?

No, you cannot leave Aruba with an expired passport. It’s important to note that if you decide to travel back to your country of origin, it may have risks associated with your asylum application.


2. I don’t have my passport; someone else has it and won’t give it to me. Can I go to the police?

Ideally, you should go to the police to report the person holding your passport, but we understand the risks associated with going to the authorities. If you choose not to go to the police, contact UNHCR or HIAS for assistance. They may refer you to community volunteers through HIAS to attempt an informal dispute resolution.



3. My baby was born in Aruba. Where can I register my baby, and what is the process?

The baby must be registered at the Aruba Civil Registry Office (CENSO) within 5 days of the child’s birth. Any declaration made after 5 days must be submitted to the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

You will need the following documents to register the baby:


  • A valid form of identification (parent(s)), and if married, your marriage certificate

  • Birth certificate of the child issued by the hospital

  • Copy of the recognition certificate if the child was recognized before birth

  • Marriage certificate, if applicable


A child born in Aruba will not obtain Dutch nationality unless one of the parents holds Dutch nationality. Please note that there may be exceptions. For more detailed advice on this topic, please contact our helpline.


4. Guarda Nos Costa has my passport. I’m afraid to go back and recover it. What can I do to get my passport back?
