Legal assistance for IDPs
UNHCR provides a range of legal assistance to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in key areas:
- Counselling: IDPs receive information about their rights and responsibilities through group sessions and individual counselling. Topics covered include access to documentation, family law issues, and protection from exploitation and abuse.
- Documentation Support: IDPs are assisted in obtaining, verifying and reissuing essential identity documents such as Yemeni ID cards. Access to these documents enables IDPs to exercise their rights and access services.
- Mediation: UNHCR offers mediation support to resolve disputes, particularly those related to housing, land, and property (HLP) issues.
- Awareness: Lawyers provide IDPs with information session on access to rights, available services and pathways to address legal issues.
