For more information, consult <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscis.gov\/\">United States Citizenship and Immigration Services<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the United States, therefore:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>UNHCR <strong>does not register<\/strong> refugees.<\/li>\n<li>UNHCR <strong>does not examine<\/strong> asylum applications.<\/li>\n<li>UNHCR <strong>does not issue<\/strong> refugee documents &#8211; the United States government handles these responsibilities.<\/li>\n<li>UNHCR <strong>does not resettle<\/strong> asylum seekers or other individuals located in the United States.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>UNHCR\u2019s role in the United States focuses on working with the US Government, non-governmental and other organizations, volunteer networks and communities to ensure the protection of refugees and asylum seekers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The United States is a party to the 1967 Protocol Relating to the Status of Refugees and the United States government has the responsibility to process asylum claims and to decide whether somebody can be given legal protection in the United States.
