When you are granted refugee status, the Home Office creates a UKVI account for you, and your immigration status is now shown digitally through an eVisa &#8211; this has replaced the old <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/biometric-residence-permits\">Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) cards<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can use your eVisa to prove your right to work, and you\u2019ll still need a National Insurance number to start employment. More information can be found&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/browse\/benefits\/low-income\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-help-unhcr-q-and-a-inner q-and-a-inner accordion-item my-10\" id=\"qa-974a5017-6ec4-475c-aad2-9185659f5a54\" data-item-content=\"q-and-a-item-3\" itemscope itemprop=\"mainEntity\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/Question\"><h3 class=\"accordion-header\" id=\"q-and-a-item-3\"><button class=\"accordion-button bg-info collapsed\" type=\"button\" data-bs-toggle=\"collapse\" data-bs-target=\"#collapse-qa-974a5017-6ec4-475c-aad2-9185659f5a54-3\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"collapse-qa-974a5017-6ec4-475c-aad2-9185659f5a54-3\"><span class=\"accordion-count\">3<\/span><span class=\"q-and-a__box-title fw-bolder fs-3\">Can I get financial and housing support if I am an asylum seeker?<\/span><\/button><\/h3><div id=\"collapse-qa-974a5017-6ec4-475c-aad2-9185659f5a54-3\" class=\"accordion-collapse collapse\" aria-labelledby=\"q-and-a-item-3\" data-bs-parent=\"\"><div class=\"accordion-body py-16 px-20\" itemscope itemprop=\"acceptedAnswer\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/Answer\">\n<p>If you are an asylum seeker that has a claim pending or if even if you have been refused asylum, you may be eligible for asylum support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The three main types of support available are: section 95, section 98 and section 4 support. With this support, you may be eligible for housing and financial assistance, or both. You are eligible for section 95 support if you are an asylum seeker with a&nbsp;<strong>pending asylum claim<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>you are over 18 years old<\/strong>&nbsp;and you pass the&nbsp;<strong>destitution test<\/strong>. However, the immigration rules allow for people seeking asylum to request permission to work if you have been waiting for more than 12 months on your asylum claim \u201cthrough no fault of your own\u201d. This may be 12 months after initially&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/righttoremain.org.uk\/toolkit\/claimasylum\/\">claiming asylum<\/a>, or 12 months after submitting further submissions to be considered as a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/righttoremain.org.uk\/toolkit\/freshclaim\/\">fresh claim<\/a>. Those who are granted permission to work and have submitted an application on or before 3 April 2024 are restricted to jobs on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/skilled-worker-visa-shortage-occupations\/skilled-worker-visa-shortage-occupations\">Shortage Occupation List<\/a>. Any applications submitted on or after 4 April 2024, who are granted, are restricted to jobs on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/skilled-worker-visa-immigration-salary-list\/skilled-worker-visa-immigration-salary-list\">Immigration Salary List<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Migration Justice Project at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawcentreni.org\/\">Law Centre NI<\/a>&nbsp;has drafted a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawcentreni.org\/news\/permission-to-work-asylum-seekers\/\">guide<\/a>&nbsp;to help people seeking asylum understand how and whether they can apply for permission to work while their claim is pending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Asylum seekers can however volunteer whilst their claim is being considered. Volunteering involves spending time, unpaid, doing something that aims to benefit the environment or someone (individuals or groups) other than, or in addition to, close relatives.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Changes to BRPs and transition to eVisas<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 31 October 2024, the Home Office have not issued new BRP cards.&nbsp;Anyone receiving a positive asylum decision after this date will have their eVisas automatically created by the Home Office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-help-unhcr-alert alert alert-info\" id=\"alert-2a1ed2cf-13ed-40b2-8945-2aca939b2fec\"><div class=\"alert__content alert__content d-flex align-items-center gap-8\"><div class=\"alert__text\"><p class=\"alert__description\">All BRP cards expired on 31 December 2024.&nbsp;If you have an existing BRP card, you should register for an eVisa. The immigration status and conditions attached to your current permission to stay will remain the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can register for an eVisa on the UK Government website:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/get-access-evisa\">https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/get-access-evisa<\/a>. The Home Office has created a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/collections\/evisa-support-videos\">step-by-step guide<\/a>&nbsp;and a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/what-is-an-evisa-video\/what-is-an-evisa-video\">video<\/a>&nbsp;of the process to guide you through this process.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please note that children will need their own UKVI account. A parent or guardian can set-up eVisa access&nbsp;for their child.&nbsp;You can read more about&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/using-your-uk-visas-and-immigration-account\">creating a&nbsp;UKVI&nbsp;account for a child<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep your expired&nbsp;BRP&nbsp;card as it may help with future applications to stay in the UK. You may also want it for your personal records. You can then use this to access your eVisa online.
