Support in Kampala
If you choose to live in urban areas like Kampala, you’re expected to support yourself in line with the Government of Uganda’s policy.
- UNHCR primarily concentrates on protection services in collaboration with the government and partners.
- This includes facilitating access to registration, documentation, legal assistance, and security from violence and exploitation, such as gender-based violence and child protection.
- If you have specific needs, community empowerment and self-reliance are also areas of focus for UNHCR and partners.
- UNHCR and partners will help you to access basic needs and essential services like government-run health facilities, nutrition programs, and schools.
If you find it challenging to support yourself in Kampala, you can request relocation to a refugee settlement. In the settlement, humanitarian assistance is provided by UNHCR and partners through the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM).
Persons with acute needs and considered by the government to have valid reasons to live outside of settlements can access assistance on a case-by-case basis from UNHCR, implementing partners and other operational partners working in Kampala.
Please note that ALL services delivered by UNHCR and partners, including registration, are provided for FREE.
