If you choose to live in urban areas like Kampala, you’re expected to support yourself in line with the Government of Uganda’s policy.

Available Assistance in Urban Areas, like Kampala

  • UNHCR primarily concentrates on protection services in collaboration with the government and partners.
  • This includes facilitating access to registration, documentation, legal assistance, and security from violence and exploitation, such as gender-based violence and child protection.
  • If you have a specific needs, community empowerment and self-reliance is also an area of focus for UNHCR and partners.
  • UNHCR and partners will help you to access basic needs and essential services like government run health facilitates, nutrition programs, and schools.

Relocation Option:

If you find it challenging to support yourself in Kampala, you can request relocation to a refugee settlement. In the settlement, humanitarian assistance is provided by UNHCR and partners through the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM).

Support for Vulnerable Persons:

Persons with acute needs and considered by the government to have valid reasons to live outside of settlements can access assistance on a case-by-case basis from UNHCR, implementing partners and other operational partners working in Kampala.
