Seeking asylum is a fundamental human right
- Everyone has the right to life and liberty.
- Everyone has the right to freedom from fear.
- Everyone has the right to seek asylum from persecution.
You can seek asylum in Uganda if you have entered Uganda and:
- you are afraid to return to your country of origin or country of previous residence because you fear for your safety due to your race, religion, nationality, political opinion, sex or membership in a particular social group.
- You flee war or events seriously disturbing the public order in your country of origin, or country of previous residence.
To apply for asylum in Uganda, you need to register your application. This will ensure:
- You remain legal in the country.
- You have access to public services and available assistance.
- You are not forced to return to your country of origin while the government decides on your application.

Who can apply for asylum with me?
It is your right to remain with your family when seeking refugee status. You should not be separated from family members upon arrival in Uganda and/or after approaching a refugee reception officer.
“Family members” that can apply for asylum with you are:
- Your spouse
- Your children under 18 years of age
Please note: Registration is a continuous and ongoing process; whenever family status changes (marriage, divorce, birth, death, etc.), the Office of the Prime Minister should be informed of the changes as soon as possible so your records can be updated.
I am under 18 years old and came to Uganda without my parents and other family members. How do I apply for refugee status?
- If you are under 18 years of age and are not accompanied by any family members, you may apply for refugee status by yourself.
- If you apply for refugee status as an unaccompanied child, your age must be established by the Office of the Prime Minister.
