{"id":2138,"date":"2026-01-08T15:59:24","date_gmt":"2026-01-08T15:59:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/help.unhcr.org\/switzerland\/?page_id=2138"},"modified":"2026-05-06T06:33:08","modified_gmt":"2026-05-06T06:33:08","slug":"right-to-stay","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/help.unhcr.org\/switzerland\/rights-and-duties\/right-to-stay\/","title":{"rendered":"Right to stay"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>You can stay in Switzerland during the asylum procedure (<strong>N permit<\/strong>), once asylum has been granted (<strong>B permit<\/strong>) or if you have been provisionally (<strong>F permit<\/strong>) admitted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u27a1\ufe0fIf you are a recognized refugee (<strong>B permit<\/strong>), your residence permit is initially valid for one year but is usually renewed by the canton of residence as long as the grounds for your refugee status continue to exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u27a1\ufe0fIf you are a temporarily admitted refugee (<strong>refugee F permit<\/strong>) or a temporarily admitted person (<strong>foreigner F permit<\/strong>), your residence permit is usually issued for a maximum of twelve months and may be renewed by the canton of residence for a further twelve months. After you have legally resided in Switzerland for five years, you can apply for a B permit under certain conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u27a1\ufe0fAfter legally residing in Switzerland for ten years with a <strong>B permit<\/strong>, you can apply for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sem.admin.ch\/sem\/en\/home\/themen\/aufenthalt\/eu_efta\/ausweis_c_eu_efta.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>C permit<\/strong><\/a><strong> (settlement permit)<\/strong> under certain conditions. In certain cases, five years of legal residence are sufficient if a successful integration can be proven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u27a1\ufe0fHowever, if <strong>your<\/strong> <strong>asylum application is rejected<\/strong>, you will receive a removal order and you have to leave Switzerland as soon as possible by your own means.
