{"id":121,"date":"2019-05-08T16:14:01","date_gmt":"2019-05-08T16:14:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/help.unhcr.org\/slovenia\/?page_id=121"},"modified":"2026-04-23T14:17:38","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T14:17:38","slug":"citizenship","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/help.unhcr.org\/slovenia\/living\/citizenship\/","title":{"rendered":"Citizenship of the Republic of Slovenia"},"content":{"rendered":"<section class=\"citizenship\">If you have <strong>refugee status<\/strong>, you can apply for Slovenian citizenship after <strong>5 years of residence<\/strong> in Slovenia, if you meet the conditions below.<em>Note: Different rules may apply to people with other types of status.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><!-- REQUIREMENTS --><\/p>\n<div class=\"info-box\">\n<h3>Requirements<\/h3>\n<p>To apply, you must:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Be at least <strong>18 years old<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Have a <strong>stable income<\/strong> (usually employment or regular income for at least 2 years)<\/li>\n<li>Pass a <strong>basic Slovene language exam<\/strong> or complete a recognised education programme<\/li>\n<li>Not have been sentenced to:\n<ul>\n<li>more than 3 months in prison (unconditional), or<\/li>\n<li>more than 1 year (conditional sentence)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Have a valid residence permit (not cancelled)<\/li>\n<li>Not pose a threat to public order, security, or national defence<\/li>\n<li>Have no outstanding taxes<\/li>\n<li>Sign a declaration to respect the legal system of Slovenia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- CHILDREN --><\/p>\n<div class=\"info-box\">\n<h3>Citizenship for children<\/h3>\n<p>A child is granted Slovenian citizenship at birth if <strong>at least one parent is a Slovenian citizen<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"157\" data-end=\"228\">A child might also be granted Slovenian citizenship if they are born in Slovenia and:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"230\" data-end=\"338\">\n<li data-section-id=\"kopvu9\" data-start=\"230\" data-end=\"261\">The parents are unknown, or<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"u589zy\" data-start=\"262\" data-end=\"305\">The parents\u2019 nationality is unknown, or<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1xp7wt6\" data-start=\"306\" data-end=\"338\">The child has no nationality<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"340\" data-end=\"442\">If you are a refugee and your child is born in Slovenia and <strong data-start=\"378\" data-end=\"409\">cannot get your nationality<\/strong>, the child may be <strong data-start=\"428\" data-end=\"441\">stateless<\/strong>. In this case, the child may be able to get Slovenian citizenship.
