Work and income
UNHCR is working with partners to support your livelihoods:
- We are partnering with Tropical General Investment (TGI) Group to provide farming training and to buy the produce from refugee and community farmers.
- We are also working with Caritas Nigeria to help coordinate job and business opportunities across all locations.
This support is part of our work to help refugees and host communities build a sustainable future.
Farming
Refugees who are interested in agriculture in Nigeria are provided with land from the Government of Nigeria for agricultural activity and support from the private sector.
How can I become a farmer as a refugee in Nigeria?
To become a farmer as a refugee, you will have to join one of the Farmers’ Cooperative Societies, which are available at all the refugee hosting location in the Staes of Akwa-Ibom, Benue, Cross River and Taraba. Interested individuals can also access land, where the available land is more than the Cooperative can use. Indivials and Cooperative can also access land by approaching host community members who have available lant to either give freely, or on lease agreements.
Access to financial institutions
Refugees are able to open a bank account in some commercial banks and microfinance institutions in their residential locations. What is required is a National Identity Number and the legal document such as an asylum seeker certificate or a refugee certificate.
